A Witness Among the Bodies: Surviving Bluestar
On the 32nd anniversary, Ensaaf shares an eyewitness account of the Indian Army assault on the Harmandir Sahib Complex in Amritsar, Punjab, from June 1 to June 6, 1984. This account is coupled with archival footage of the inside of the complex, filmed during that first week of June by the Associated Press. The exclusive eyewitness interview reveals how the Indian Army intentionally killed thousands of civilians and used excessive force during the assault.
This attack launched the Decade of Disappearances, 10 years of gross human rights violations in Punjab, including widespread and systematic torture, murder, and disappearances. No government or security official has been held accountable for the Army assault. Without a true accounting of the abuses, as well as justice and reparations for survivors, impunity will continue to prevail in India.
Ensaaf is determined to achieve justice and end impunity. It is crucial that we continue and complete our work of documenting abuses, bringing perpetrators to justice, and organizing survivors. To reach this goal, we ask you to Watch. Share. Donate.
