How You Can Help
Update on Kuljit Singh Dhatt Case
When people learn about Ensaaf, one of their first questions is often this: “How can I help?”
It is always heartening to hear this offer of support. And right now, this is how you can help — register now for Appear for the Disappeared 2014, Ensaaf’s second annual 5K Walk. Each person who walks will receive a short bio of a victim of disappearance or extrajudicial killing, whose memory you will commemorate. Walk in Fremont, Houston, New York City, in your community or walk virtually.
This year, the walk is sponsored by the family of Kuljit Singh Dhatt on the 25th anniversary of his killing. Ensaaf is currently providing litigation support in the Dhatt trial at the Sessions Court; final arguments will begin in early March. Among other police officers, this trial implicates a serving senior police officer, as well as another officer convicted of the murder of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra.
“We have great hope. A case is fought with hope that justice will be given. The defense is using delay tactics, but those only work to a certain point. We hope that they will be sentenced according to their crimes. And we believe in the judicial process, that the judiciary will do what is right,” Harbhajan Singh Dhatt, Kuljit Singh Dhatt’s brother, told Ensaaf. Harbhajan Singh Dhatt and his family have pursued this case with dedication, collecting evidence, withstanding police intimidation and threats, and overcoming delay tactics used by the police, among other obstacles.
When you walk, you will let the world know that we have not forgotten those who were disappeared or unlawfully killed by security forces in Punjab during the Decade of Disappearances. Your registration fees and fundraising proceeds will also help Ensaaf continue to document human rights abuses in the remaining villages we need to reach in Punjab.
