Images of Empowerment From Surat 2013
I recently had the pleasure of representing Ensaaf at the Surat 2013 conference in New Jersey. The theme of this year's conference was challenging injustice through a Sikh framework. Surat provided an energetic platform for Ensaaf to share its work with young professionals looking to discover ways to use their passions—whether in medicine, law, technology or arts—to engage with social justice issues.
In keeping with the theme, Ensaaf invited attendees to participate in a photo shoot depicting messages that resonated with them during the conference. What resulted was an imaginative use of their bodies to illustrate themes about Sikh history and experience.
One powerful image shows young men and women extending their arms out with the message "We Will Not Disappear" written on their palms. The idea was to create an image of empowerment that would go hand in hand with the imagery created during Ensaaf's "Decade of Disappearances" art contest. Whereas the goal of the art contest was to reflect on the killings and disappearances by Indian security forces in Punjab between 1984 and 1995, the goal of this photo shoot was to capture the resilient spirit of the Sikh community today.
Ensaaf strives to find innovative ways to engage the international community in understanding the human rights abuses in Punjab and advancing justice. We hope that you are inspired by these images and share them with your family and friends. Images from our art contest and photo shoot at Surat can be found on our Facebook page.
