How Survivors Remember Their Loved Ones Today

This is how Ravinder Kaur, my Chachi Ji, remembers her husband, Sarwan Singh, who was killed by the Punjab Police in 1993.

Why Satinder Kaur, Multimedia Director, Gives to Ensaaf

I give my time and efforts to Ensaaf, because Ensaaf’s work has real world personal impact. Ravinder Kaur is my Chachi Ji. The Punjab Police killed my Chacha Ji in 1993. We never received his body or his ashes. For my family, and thousands of others like mine, what happened in Punjab is not an issue of the past. We are reminded, everyday, of the loss of that person who was supposed to be here participating in our daily lives.

“To live your lives never having seen the dead body of your loved one, to never having performed his last rites, is to never have closure.” – Satinder Kaur

My Chacha Ji was the kindest and funniest person I’ve ever known. Whenever he entered a room, he brought laughter with him. People often say that what happened in the past has happened, and we should move on. But the human rights violations in Punjab are not a matter of the past. The families continue to experience the ripple effects of disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and torture to this day. To live your lives never having seen the dead body of your loved one, to never having performed his last rites, is to never have closure. And there can’t be closure or peace until there is an end to impunity. Ensaaf’s work records the testimonies of people like my Chachi Ji, and builds the foundation for ending impunity.

We Have Reached Around 12,000 Villages

Help us continue our work to document disappearances and unlawful killings in Punjab. We have reached around 12,000 villages and have less than 1,000 left. We need more staff to help us process the testimonies we have collected.

Join me and spread the word by participating in the #WhyIGiveToEnsaaf campaign.

Thank you!
